A Journey Through Our Association's History
Explore the significant milestones that have shaped our association. Each event highlights our commitment to fostering a vibrant golfing community.
Foundations & Governance Reform
The groundwork for the BDGA began in the 1920s with the formation of key clubs and a shift in governance.
- 1922–1928: Wynnum, Sandgate, Goodna (now Gailes), and Oxley Golf Clubs were founded.
- 1929: The Queensland Golf Council replaced the Queensland Golf Association. A new Outer Brisbane Metropolitan Association was formed for clubs outside the 5-mile GPO radius. Nudgee joined later that year.
Expansion & Representation
Growth in membership led to changes in structure and representation.
- 1930–1931: Virginia joined. District championships and inter-club matches began. Victoria Park’s formation prompted a name change to Greater Brisbane Golf Association (GBGA). Enoggera (now Keperra) also joined.
- 1933: GBGA secured a second delegate on the Golf Council.
- 1936–1939: Pacific, Peninsular (now Redcliffe), and Ashgrove clubs joined. A third GBGA delegate was granted in 1938.
War & Unification Efforts
Despite wartime challenges, unification discussions gained momentum.
- WWII impacted attendance and resources, including fuel, liquor, and golf ball shortages.
- 1943: Talks began to bring all Brisbane clubs under one body.
- 1949: Agreement reached among 14 metropolitan clubs to form a single association.
BDGA Officially Formed
A unified era for Brisbane golf begins.
- January 1, 1950: The Brisbane District Golf Association (BDGA) is officially launched.
- A single pennant competition was introduced, eventually expanding to include Senior and Junior series.
- New competitions included Foursomes, Veteran, Junior, and Schoolboys’ Championships.
- The Champion of Champions event was introduced.
Inter-District Competition Begins
The BDGA broadens its competitive reach.
- 1985: Inter-district pennant matches launched, beginning with the Gold Coast District.
- Rules and formats continued to evolve to accommodate more clubs and fair play.
Support & Development

- Pennant trophies
